Ben does not work for the church, though he did stride close to priesthood, before realizing that his desires did not lie in religion or scripture, but in helping anyone who would fall victim to the very thing his father had learned to dispel, the very thing that eventually took Ben's father, and his mother, and nearly Ben himself. Ben would devote his life not to one belief, but to what was tangible to him — demons and angels, and with his uncle, Father Tobias, Ben would learn to face them, any of them, no matter their origin or handling. while not a priest, he primarily assists Tobias in exorcisms and general banishings of demons and malevolent spirits, but...not all the time does the diocese approve of the measure. that's when Ben gets called in solo. mum's the word. when he isn't banishing these awful creatures out of your grandma or your basement, Ben is trying to use his doctorate in religious studies for good, or at least putting people into some solid naps. it's okay — he keeps mostly to himself, prickly and somewhat neurotic as he is at worst, nerdy and protective at best. if that's your thing. but please, don't call him an exorcist; he prefers 'demonologist.' also, his guardian angel has been his friend since he was a child. that's normal, right? Ben was raised by his uncle, Tobias, a priest still with the church, and fellow exorcist to his late-brother. Tobias, hoping to give his nephew closure, introduced him into the study of religions, consequent cultures, and eventually demonic entities. Ben became highly obsessed with demonology, finding security in the sense of knowing how to eradicate them, and he devoted his life to the study and interception of them, under assisting his uncle in his side work and through communion with Peter. close to going to seminary school, Tobias questioned the choice to the barely-eighteen year old Benedict, and the realization sent him to university to study world religions, where he also notched his belt with a minor in psychology. he studied abroad and assisted off-the-cuff with demonic oppressions, curses, and hauntings. his work and study in the field put him in contact with many in the realm, bolstering his reputation by the time he received his doctorate. he was assimilated quickly by the school he studied at as an associate professor, giving lectures to meet position requirements, but primarily their field guy to share with the department the cultural and spiritual understandings of the world, because if Ben is going to work this tirelessly to study demons, he might as well spread the wealth of knowledge. also pay his bills with it. he has, throughout the course of his work, developed a tendency toward witchcraft as a tool for exorcisms and self-preservation, coming to understand that no one religion is a true religion, but masks for the same concept overall. demons exist worldwide in many manifestations, and he is continuously learning how to face them all. DEMEANOR: flat, internalized, gentle, serious, studious, unflappable or extremely flappable (no middle ground) VIRTUES: altruistic, cautious, committing, compassionate, diligent, discerning, meticulous, punctual, responsible, willing VICES: argumentative, blunt, bossy, fussy, nit-picky, occasionally melancholy, obsessive, pedantic, rigid, stubborn COMPULSIONS: from obsessive-compulsive disorder (from childhood to present): checking, symmetry, and fixations without visual compulsions. tamed, but when presented with 'omens' (particular signs, especially numbers) or while especially taxed, he will present these compulsions more aggressively. while superstitions aren't OCDs, they seem to have some particularly associative qualities for Ben and it's worth noting; he lives with his various OCDs stemmed out of a foreboding sense of doom as much as symbolism of numbers in history and cultures, as self-preservation tactics, and in predicting possible outcomes.
